SILVERSTONE, England – During a special event Thursday at the Silverstone Circuit, Formula 1 officials gave race fans their first look at the new race car that will debut in 2022.
The car features a number of new innovations, including a flat nose, wheel aero-covers, a large front wing with endplates and a fresh rear wing concept. The goal of the new car is to make the racing closer and promote passing.
Featuring a ground effect floor and simpler wings, the downforce created by the car won’t make it as much of a challenge for drivers to catch and pass their rivals. It’s worth nothing that the car that debuted Thursday was built and designed by F-1 officials, so the cars that will be built by teams are likely to look and feel different.
Among the other changes to the car are 18 inch wheels with low-profile tires and a more sustainable fuel mix for the engines, which will be the same engines utilized by teams in 2021.
The car was originally scheduled to debut this year, however the COVID-19 pandemic forced officials to postpone the debut of the car to 2022.
