ADELAIDE, Australia — Jaxon Evans walked away from a crash during Boost Mobile Qualifying, with Broc Feeney claiming provisional pole for Race 24 at the VAILO Adelaide 500.
Evans became the latest victim of Adelaide’s infamous Turn 8, with the Brad Jones Racing rookie pinballing across the circuit in the closing minutes of the session.
With the session red-flagged and declared, Saturday winner Feeney claimed provisional pole ahead of Cam Waters by 0.0405s, with Ryan Wood and Chaz Mostert making it a Walkinshaw Andretti United three-four result.
Champion-elect Will Brown was fifth ahead of Thomas Randle, with Will Davison, Brodie Kostecki, Nick Percat and Anton De Pasquale completing the Top Ten Shootout running order.
The session began in bizarre scenes for Percat and Wood, who tripped over each other at Turn 4. Wood, weaving after exiting pit lane, tipped Percat into a spin. Officials advised the incident will be investigated.
Feeney opened up with a 1:20.2331s ahead of Mostert (1:20.3544s), Wood (1:20.4860s) and Brown (1:20.6036s).
Feeney pressed on and set a 1:19.6382s ahead of Mostert (1:19.7452s), Brown (1:19.7878s) and Kostecki (1:19.8683s), before Waters (1:19.6558s) and Wood (1:19.7407s) improved.
Ahead of the second runs, Feeney led Waters, Wood, Mostert, Brown, Randle, Davison, Kostecki, Percat and De Pasquale.
However, as drivers loomed to go faster and secure a Shootout berth, Evans strike trouble, the SCT Logistics Chevrolet Camaro sustaining major damage after first hitting the Turn 8 wall, before going into the concrete head-on as it slid down the track.
“The car looks pretty badly damaged, it takes a long time to do these sorts of repairs and we don’t have a lot of time now,” team owner Jones said.
“The boys are always up for a challenge, so we’ll get it back here and see what we can do, but it’s just unfortunate that he’s clipped that inside kerb and it’s put him into the outside wall pretty hard.”
