Auto racing lost a friend this past weekend. I lost one, too.
Jack Flowers was not on Fox or Speed talking 70 miles per hour, but he did a lot for racing, especially NASCAR.
Readers of National Speed Sport News have been familiar with Jack’s writing for the past five or six years. Before that, he wrote his popular Say It With Flowers column in Area Auto Racing News and Speedway Scene.
Well known on the NASCAR scene, Jack went 17 years without missing a Cup Series race until he began cutting back in the late 1990s. Since then he has worked the race weekend staff at various tracks, including Charlotte Motor Speedway.
In recent years, Jack has battled cancer and underwent dialysis three times per week. Through it all, I never once heard Jack complain. He took his difficulties in stride, as part of life and he was a happier man for it.
I for one will think about Jack every time I start to complain about something that really isn’t that significant.
Living near Charlotte Motor Speedway, Jack was a frequent visitor to the NSSN office, stopping in almost weekly for a chat about the racing world. His booming voice echoed through the hallways as he made his way to my desk.
His smile and cheerful greetings will not soon be forgotten.
In recent years Jack had lost some of his best friends, including Bob Latford, the creator of NASCAR’s point system, and former racer Dick May.
Maybe Jack, Bob and Dick will once again enjoy morning coffee together. We can only hope
Safe journey my friend.
