LE MANS, France — Prior to leaving for the 24 hours of Le Mans, Ralph Sheheen asked me to write a blog about my annual French adventures working for Radio Show Limited and their Radio Le Mans broadcasts and I thought this would be a great year to do that because it is an extraordinary year.
2013 marks some special anniversaries, including the 90th anniversary of the race (the 81st running), the 60th anniversary of the Corvette (seven wins at Le Mans) and the 50th for the Porsche 911 (16 overall Le Mans victories). Also, to celebrate 100th anniversary of Aston Martin, the boys from Bandbury have brought five V-8 Vantages to run in the GTE-Pro ( three cars) and GTE-Am (two cars). They also happen to be the favorites for many of the prognosticators in both those categories.
This year marks my 15th trip to the world’s greatest motor race and my 11th Radio Le Mans broadcast. Unfortunately my ALMS and Le Mans running mate Charles Dressing has had to take a pass on this year’s race because of schedule and travel conflicts and the entire team will miss him.
That word “team” is important at Le Mans. The combination of my passion for endurance sports car racing and the team at Radio Le Mans is what makes this annual busman’s holiday so special for me. The one year I missed since 2000 my ill temper caused by poor wife to quip, “You’ll be not missing that race again, as I’ll not suffer through another week like that anytime soon.”
