Belgian rider Eric Palante was found dead Friday morning following the fifth stage of the Dakar Rally.
Event organizers released a statement indicating that the body of the 50-year-old man was found at the 143-km mark of Thursday’s stage, the longest stage of the event. A vehicle had been sent to recover him on Friday morning after he didn’t complete the stage.
Rally officials said they didn’t not receive any alerts during the stage about Palante and would continue to investigate the circumstances of his death. This was Palante’s 11th Dakar Rally.
He is the 27th competitor killed in the history of the event.
