MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Martins Motorsports has announced plans to return to the NASCAR XFINITY Series beginning with the event at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway on April 22.
Tommy Joe Martins will pilot the No. 45 Chevrolet at Bristol Motor Speedway with sponsorship from Diamond Gusset Jeans.
Martins Motorsports plans to enter at least nine NASCAR XFINITY Series races this year. In addition to both Bristol races this year, the team plans to enter both events at Richmond Int’l Raceway and Dover Int’l Speedway. Events at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Kansas Speedway and Chicagoland Speedway are also on the schedule.
With the move to the NASCAR XFINITY Series, the team will no longer compete in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series with the exception of the dirt race at Eldora Speedway, where J.R. Heffner will drive for the team.
Kevin Engle will serve as crew chief for the NASCAR XFINITY Series effort.
“The timing was right,” said team owner Craig Martins. “We had a tremendous opportunity to make this move and we took it. A return to XFINITY was a long-term goal for us, it just worked out a lot quicker than we expected.”
The XFINITY Series race at Bristol on April 22 will be the first race for the team in the XFINITY Series since 2014.
“I’ve said a lot about our struggles in 2014. It left a really bad taste in our mouths,” said Tommy Joe Martins. “I’m looking forward to this. I’ve wanted another chance for a long time. I loved the Truck Series, but I’m excited to be an XFINITY Series driver again. Having Diamond Gusset back on the car just makes it even more special.”
