Busch stayed at the front for the remainder of the first segment, with Jeff Gordon, Harvick, Kasey Kahne and Edwards completing the top five after 20 laps. Most of the field pitted during the break after the first second, but Denny Hamlin decided to stay out and inherited the lead.
The first car off pit road was Brad Keselowski, who took two tires. Also taking two tires were Ryan Newman and Kurt Busch in third and fourth, with Kyle Busch restarting fifth.
Hamlin pulled out ahead of the field during the restart as Keselowski and Kurt Busch gave chase, but on lap 26 the first caution flag of the night waved for segment one winner Kyle Busch. The younger of the Busch brothers had tried to go low down the backstretch to pass Sprint Showdown winner Clint Bowyer, but the two made contact.
The contact sent Busch spinning as they entered turn three. As Busch came back down the track Joey Logano found himself with nowhere to go and slammed into the No. 18 Toyota, ending the night for both drivers.
“I was just trying to run the high side there and got a run off (turn) two,” Kyle Busch said. “I saw Kurt (Busch) get really bottled up and about get in the wall, so he had to check up real hard and my shot was the middle – to go across three lanes and underneath Bowyer, but Bowyer blocked it and when he did I got into him and got him squirrely and I was still going low trying to get by him and he touched me and just spun me out the wrong way.”
The field returned to racing with 30 laps complete and Edwards in command, but the action was halted again when Sprint Showdown runner-up A.J. Allmendinger spun out of the back down the backstretch and hit the inside wall.
When the field returned to racing Edwards held the lead, but this time he had Kahne on his rear bumper. Edwards was unable to keep Kahne behind him as Kahne took the lead away on lap 35, leading the remainder of the second segment in the process. Harvick, Edwards, Greg Biffle and Kurt Busch followed.
McMurray’s team began the strategy play after the second segment, opting not to pit when nearly everyone else did. That gave him the lead for the third segment restart ahead of Kenseth, Keselowski and Martin Truex Jr., all of whom didn’t pit. The first car off pit road that did pit was Greg Biffle, who took two tires.
