QUERÉTARO, Mexico – Rafael Martínez really enjoys racing at the Autódromo Ecocentro in Querétaro.
The Monterrey native edged out Homero Richards for his 17th NASCAR Toyota Series victory on Sunday in the Querétana 200, capturing the lead coming out of turn four of the final lap. It was Martínez’s fifth win in 18 series races at the city just two hours north of Mexico City.
Richards held the lead going in to turn three of the final lap before Martínez made his move. The two drivers fought for the top spot coming out of turn four and down the final stretch with Martínez edging Richards out by .29 seconds. It was Richards’ third top-five finish of 2013 and 41st of his career.
Antonio Pérez, whoe entered the day leading the championship points standings, finished third while pole sitter Daniel Suárez crossed the line in fourth place. Rodrigo Peralta scored his first career top-five finish and second top 10 of the current season with a fifth-place effort.
