CONCORD, N.C. – A.J. Allmendinger will start from the pole for the Sprint Showdown, the qualifying race prior to the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race Saturday at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Allmendinger’s 28.057-second lap at 192.465 miles per hour was more than a full mile per hour faster than second place qualifier Martin Truex, Jr.
“For me it was a perfect lap. In practice we struggled a little bit just trying to figure out what the car needed,” said Allmendinger, who won the Showdown in 2008 to qualify for the All-Star Race. “Todd Gordon (crew chief) and the guys put together a good setup and I felt like that was as perfect as I could run a lap.”
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. was fastest in Showdown practice, but wasn’t able to back it up in qualifying. He starts third. Jeff Burton and Aric Almirola completed the top five.
The first and second place finishers in the Sprint Showdown will move on to the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race Saturday evening. A third driver, the winner of the Sprint Fan Vote, will also advance from the Showdown to the All-Star Race.
