CONCORD, N.C. — Legendary NASCAR racer and team owner Junior Johnson was the recipient of the Achievement in Motorsports Tribute Award during Friday night’s fifth annual North Carolina Motorsports Ass’n banquet at the Embassy Suites.
Johnson was saluted via a brief video presentation followed by a roundtable discussion where tales of Johnson’s days racing and running moonshine were told by former driver Jimmy Spencer, renowned Charlotte Observer writer Tom Higgins, former Charlotte Motor Speedway General Manager Humpy Wheeler and historian Buz McKim.
Finally, it was a humble Johnson who accepted the award to a standing ovation.
“I’ve had a pretty exciting life,” Johnson said. “I did a little bit of everything and I have had a great life. I am a self-made person.”
Earlier in the evening, National Speed Sport News Publisher Corinne Economaki accepted the NCMA’s inaugural Media Recognition Award on behalf of her father and longtime NSSN Editor Chris Economaki.
Motorsports Industry Awards were presented to Essex Parts Services, Goodridge USA, NASCAR Media Group, North Wilkesboro Speedway, Piedmont Racing Expo, US Legend Cars Int’l and the Winston-Salem State University Motorsports Management Program.
