WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — William Byron took the pole position in record fashion for Saturday’s Sunoco Go Rewards 200 At The Glen.
Piloting the No. 17 Hendrick Motorsports entry, Byron stormed around the 2.45-mile road course at 125.021 mph, and an Xfinity Series lap record of 70.548 seconds.
“It was a fun lap for sure (in the final round),” Byron told NBC Sports. “We had a fun practice – I knew kind of, with the way it felt in practice, I was like, ‘Man, it feels good. I think this thing’s got a lot of potential.’”
The Cup Series regular was followed by Ty Gibbs, and teammate Kyle Larson.
2014 Watkins Glen NASCAR Cup Series winner A.J. Allmendinger followed suit in 4th, with Ford driver Cole Custer in 5th.
Spencer Pumpelly, Stanton Barrett, and Austin Wayne Self failed to qualify for the event.
