MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Todd Gordon, the crew chief for Team Penske NASCAR Cup Series driver Ryan Blaney, announced Monday he plans to retire at the end of the season.
Gordon made the announcement during an interview on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
“It’s just one of those things. You look at any life and there are several chapters in it,” said Gordon. “It’s been an awesome run here at Team Penske. Really, really happy and fortunate to have the opportunities that I’ve had here.
“But when you look at it going forward, this is my 23 year down here in NASCAR, and 10 years in the Cup Series. I just made a family decision that this will be my last year sitting on the pit box. I’m going to make the transition to something else and a new chapter of life.”
Gordon joined Team Penske in 2011 as a crew chief in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, where he worked with Kurt Busch, Sam Hornish Jr., Brad Keselowski, Parker Kligerman and Jacques Villeneuve. He earned six victories that season, which resulted in a promotion to the NASCAR Cup Series in 2012.
He spent the 2012 season working first with A.J. Allmendinger and later Sam Hornish Jr. on the Team Penske No. 22. The 2013 season saw Joey Logano take over the No. 22 car and the pairing of Gordon and Logano quickly clicked.
The duo earned one victory in 2013 before capturing five and six victories in the two seasons that followed. Logano won three times and finished second in the Cup Series standings in 2016 with Gordon at the helm, but a difficult 2017 saw the team earn just one victory and fail to make the playoffs.
The duo rebounded one year later, winning three times on their way to capturing the NASCAR Cup Series championship. The Logano and Gordon pairing were together for one more season in 2019, winning twice and finishing fifth in the Cup standings.
Team Penske shuffled the crew chief lineup for the 2020 season, pairing Gordon with Ryan Blaney. The two of since won twice, including once this year at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
“I’m looking to have a little more family time,” Gordon said. “I’ve got two daughters, one in college, one in high school. Just blessed for the opportunities I’ve had to this point and looking forward to just making a little more of a priority out of the family time and to see what transpires in the future.”
