Supercars Officials Support Brown & Waters At Sonoma

SONOMA, Calif. — Three current or former Repco Supercars Championship drivers will be competing in NASCAR events this weekend at Sonoma Raceway.

Active Supercars racers Will Brown and Cam Waters will compete in the 35th annual Save Mart 350 NASCAR Cup Series at the scenic California road course, while former series champion Shane van Gisbergen, already a winner in the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series, will be among the drivers to beat in Saturday’s Zip Buy Now, Pay Later 250 for the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

One would think Supercars officials may be frustrated by its drivers exploring NASCAR competition, but such is not the case.

“We’re thrilled to support two of our sports stars this weekend as they make their NASCAR debuts,” said Supercars CEO Shane Howard. “This initiative highlights our dedication to bringing the exceptional talent within Supercars to a global audience.

“Following the memorable debuts of Shane van Gisbergen and Brodie Kostecki, which drew millions of views to our website in 2023, we expect a similar surge in interest as Cam Waters and Will Brown embark on this exciting challenge.”

Van Gisbergen won his first NASCAR race when he surprised the world by winning last July’s Chicago Street Race for the Cup Series. Van Gisbergen is racing full time in the Xfinity Series this season and triumphed last weekend at Portland (Ore.) Int’l Raceway.

Waters has made a pair of Craftsman Truck Series starts this season, but Sunday will be his first venture into the Cup Series, while Brown has yet to run any type of NASCAR event.

Both Brown and Waters will drive top-notch equipment at Sonoma.

Brown, who is the current Supercars point leader, will wheel the No. 33 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing as a teammate to Kyle Busch and Austin Dillon.

Meanwhile, Waters will handle a third RFK Racing Ford alongside Chris Buescher and Brad Keselowski.

Brown, who turned 26 earlier this week, has three victories and nine podium finishes in Supercars competition this season.

Waters, 29, ranks fourth in the Supercars standings and has one victory and two podium efforts this season. Waters has a best finish of 19th in his two Truck Series starts.

All Repco Supercars Championship events can be seen on SPEED SPORT 1.
