MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Tony Stewart and Jerry Cook will be honored with induction into the North Carolina Auto Racing Walk of Fame on Sept. 23 in front of the Charles Mack Citizen Center.
Each year, the North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame’s selection committee nominates two of the most outstanding contributors to the sport of auto racing. These individuals are memorialized with plaques cast into the sidewalk on the Walk of Fame.
Stewart is known for many accomplishments in motorsports, and is best recognized as having won multiple championships in both NASCAR and the IndyCar Series. Stewart co-founded Stewart-Haas Racing and continues to compete in sprint car events across the nation while also owning and managing several premier racing facilities.
Cook retired as a six-time NASCAR Modified division champion and was also named one of NASCAR’s 50 greatest drivers during the organization’s 50th anniversary season in 1998. Cook’s contributions to racing also include his helping to establish NASCAR’s Whelen Modified Tour and serving in numerous roles with the NASCAR sanctioning body.
“Tony Stewart and Jerry Cook are two of motorsports old school warriors,” said Don Miller, chairman of the North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame. “Both drivers raced from obscurity to stardom in their own arenas. Stewart and Cook have recorded multiple championships — Jerry in modifieds and Tony in both stock cars and open wheel cars.
In addition, Tony, much like his mentor A.J. Foyt, has posted numerous victories in the open wheel cars from sprints and midgets as well as Indy cars. These two racers are true champions and we are truly privileged to honor them here in Race City USA.”
“It’s an honor to welcome two deserving champions into the Walk of Fame,” said John Dodson, VP of Business Alliances & NASCAR at the NASCAR Technical Institute and Board Member to at the Hall of Fame. “Jerry and Tony each made their mark on the track and like true champions, they continue to give so much of themselves back to their community and to motorsports. We’re proud to continue growing The Walk of Fame, which adds character to Mooresville’s historic downtown and recognizes the greats from a sport that contributes so much to our community.”
Open and free to the public, the ceremony to honor Stewart and Cook will be held outside the Charles Mack Citizen Center on the Walk of Fame located at 215 N Main Street in downtown Mooresville, N.C. starting at 3 p.m.
