NASCAR announced Monday afternoon that Hendrick Motorsports’ appeal of William Byron’s penalty for spinning Denny Hamlin under caution at Texas Motor Speedway will be heard Thursday.
Byron, who is in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, was docked 25 points and fined $50,000 for his retaliatory act against Hamlin.
Byron claimed after the Sept. 25 race that while he intended to at least hit Hamlin’s bumper, he didn’t mean to spin Hamlin.
The hearing, which will be before three members of the National Motorsports Appeals Panel, will come three days before the elimination race of the Round of 12 on the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval. Byron, after finishing 12th at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday and not earning any stage points, is 10th in the playoff standings and 11 points below the cutoff line.
In the four Cup races on the Charlotte Roval, Byron’s best finish is sixth twice. He’s led 80 laps total in the last three races there.
“Road courses this year have been a little up and down, certainly feel like it’s a pretty good track for me,” Byron said after Sunday’s race. “We had a good run going last year, we just gotta keep it up.”
