Larson On Pole For Chicago Street Race

Kyle Larson is set to start on pole for Sunday’s Grant Park 165 on the streets of Chicago.

The Hendrick Motorsports driver wheeled his No. 5 Chevrolet to a fastest speed of 90.168 mph, topping Joe Gibbs Racing’s Ty Gibbs by 0.01 seconds to earn his fifth pole of the season.

Notably, Larson qualified second for the NASCAR Xfinity Series race on the Chicago Street Course.

Road course ace Michael McDowell qualified third, ahead of 23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick in fourth. After qualifying on pole for the Xfinity Series race, last year’s inaugural Chicago Street Race winner, Shane van Gisbergen, qualified his Kaulig Racing Chevrolet in fifth.

“I was trying to get my Ford Mustang on the pole,” McDowell said. “We were close, right? So proud of everybody. We made good changes in between round one and two because I felt like (Kyle) Larson and SVG sort of had everybody covered there. Then we went into that next round and made some gains and got close. You know what it means to get a pole and track position and all that.

“So we’re starting up front, we’ll have a great shot at it with the White Sox Ford Mustang. It would just be easier if you were controlling the start, but we’re in for a battle tomorrow and we’ve got a fast car and a good opportunity to try to execute and put ourselves in position to win and we’ve got to have speed to do that and we have the speed to do it.”

A pair of Toyotas followed suit in Bubba Wallace (sixth) and Christopher Bell (seventh). Larson’s teammate Alex Bowman slots in eighth while fellow Chevrolet driver Daniel Suarez qualified ninth.

RFK Racing’s Brad Keselowski completed the top 10.

In a one-off ride with RFK Racing, IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship driver Joey Hand starts 38th, one position behind A.J. Allmendinger in 37th. Allmendinger finished 17th in the event last year after contending at the front.
