MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Legacy Motor Club has withdrawn the No. 84 Chevrolet that was scheduled to be driven by Jimmie Johnson in this weekend’s Chicago Street Race.
The move was made the result of tragic events in the Johnson family.
According to published reports in Oklahoma, Johnson’s mother-in-law, father-in-law and 11-year-old nephew were killed in a shooting Monday night in Muskogee.
According to Fox 23 News in Tulsa, Okla., the deaths of Terry, Jack and Dalton Chanway are being investigated as a possible murder-suicide. Police suspect Terry Chanway of killing her husband and their grandson.
The team, co-owned by the seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and Maury Gallagher, issued a statement Tuesday afternoon: “LEGACY MOTOR CLUB has elected to withdraw the No. 84 Carvana Chevrolet from this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series event in Chicago. The Johnson family has asked for privacy at this time and no further statements will be made.”
Johnson’s wife, Chandra, grew up in Muskogee and the Johnsons have been deeply involved in supporting schools in Muskogee through the Jimmie Johnson Foundation.
The other two Legacy Motor Club entries driven by Erik Jones and Noah Gragson will compete in Chicago.
The Chicago Street Race would have been Johnson’s fourth race this season.
