DARLINGTON, S.C. — Goodyear is getting into the throwback spirit for this weekend’s NASCAR tripleheader at Darlington Raceway with its vintage Blue Streak sidewall tires.
In support of Darlington’s popular throwback initiative, this weekend’s tire will feature a different sidewall design — the Blue Streak markings common at NASCAR events in the 1960s and 1970s.
The Blue Streaks were phased out in 1981 as Goodyear’s racing tires moved to the “Eagle” design to align the brand with its high-performance passenger tire line.
The NASCAR Cup Series opens its playoff season with the grueling Southern 500, one of the most historic races on the schedule. Known as the “Track Too Tough To Tame,” Darlington is notoriously abrasive and wears tires at a rapid rate.
Cup Series teams will have 13 sets of Goodyear “Blue Streak” Eagles for the 501-mile race. Xfinity Series teams will have five sets and Truck Series teams get six sets.
