Gibbs Leads The Way In Pocono Cup Qualifying

Joe Gibbs Racing driver Ty Gibbs will lead the NASCAR Cup Series field to the green flag for Sunday’s The Great American Getaway 400 at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway.

Gibbs topped this year’s Daytona 500 winner, William Byron, by 0.118 seconds.

“Yeah, it’s really good,” Gibbs said. “It’s crazy how fast time goes by, that’s for sure and all that happens in between it. But it’s really cool to get the pole here. Really appreciate it and thanks to everyone that helps out. It was a fun qualifying session.

“I always have fun coming to Pocono. Hopefully we can go win it tomorrow.”

Gibbs’ teammate Martin Truex Jr. starts third ahead of seven-time and defending Pocono winner Denny Hamlin in fourth.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Josh Berry was the first Ford driver in fifth.

“It felt like we had a good day,” Berry said. “My Mustang feels good. I think in race trim we need to work to get a little bit better just to make sure our pace holds on. I feel good about everything we did and having a good starting spot will help.

“Lining up third is good. Track position is big here, so we are off to a good start. I think we just need to turn a little better to hold the pace longer in the race. I think we have a plan. We made good adjustments for qualifying, so we just have to keep working on it for tomorrow.”

Last week’s Chicago Street Race winner, Alex Bowman, starts sixth ahead of 23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick in seventh.

Team Penske had two drivers reach the top 10 with Ryan Blaney (eighth) and Joey Logano (10th).

Rookie Zane Smith starts ninth aboard his Spire Motorsports No. 71 Chevrolet.

As far as drivers on the playoff bubble, Chris Buescher, who holds the final spot by 45 markers, starts 18th, while the first driver out, Bubba Wallace, qualified 29th.
