Joe Nemechek Attempting Daytona Truck Opener

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Though NEMCO Motorsports isn’t planning a full NASCAR Camping World Truck Series campaign this year, veteran driver and owner Joe Nemechek has at least one more Speedweeks in him.

The 57-year-old native of Naples, Fla., confirmed on social media Tuesday afternoon that he’ll attempt to qualify for the season-opening NextEra Energy Resources 250 Friday night at Daytona Int’l Speedway.

“I’m not done just yet!” Nemechek’s Instagram post read. “Time to go Daytona Camping World Truck Series racing this Friday night.”

A team representative later confirmed that Nemechek’s Daytona attempt will come behind the wheel of the familiar No. 8 NEMCO Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado.

Nemechek is a veteran of nearly 1,200 starts across NASCAR’s three national divisions, while NEMCO Motorsports has fielded an entry in the Truck Series for at least one race in each of the last eight years.

In five career Truck Series starts at the World Center of Racing, Nemechek has three top-10 finishes, including a best of third in 2018 behind the wheel of the NEMCO Motorsports No. 87.

Nemechek failed to qualify for last February’s Daytona opener, but returned in the fall at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway and raced the No. 8 truck. He was involved in a lap-13 crash and finished 37th.

Qualifying for the NextEra Energy Resources 250 will take place Friday prior to the 100-lap race, which is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. ET start on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
