Carson Hocevar notched his first career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series pole at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway, for Saturday’s DoorDash 250.
The 19-year-old outpaced teammate and NASCAR Cup Series star Ross Chastain by .558 seconds.
Unfortunately for Hocevar, he’ll have to move to a backup truck after losing the rear of his Chevrolet Silverado coming out of the final section of the esses, backing the truck into the turn 10 tire barrier.
“I don’t know how you’re supposed to handle it, just dumb,” Hocevar said. “I tried too hard to get to the line, I had the idea that I would get to the line and hit the brakes. I had overdrove the corner and just stopped right when I got there, and I went to hit the brakes, and just got the left rear off in the dirt. I wanted the pole and tried too hard. Way too hard.”
Cup Series champion Kyle Busch followed the Niece Motorsports pair in third, with Ty Majeski and Tyler Ankrum rounding out the top-five.
Hocevar was cleared to compete at Sonoma after a wreck last weekend at World Wide Technology Raceway left the driver of the No. 42 with a broken right tibia.
