Heim Wins Rain-Shortened Truck Series Race

Corey Heim won a rain-shortened NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway Friday night.

The race was called on lap 124 after a third dousing of rain hit the .526-mile short track.

The win marked Heim’s first victory of the year and his third career win in the Truck Series.

“I bring everything, 100 percent effort to every race, every week. To be able to sit here and have it pay off is phenomenal. It is a rain-shortened race, but that clock is going to tick the same in my living room,” Heim said.

After a lightning watch paused the initial start of the race, the green flag waved just before 10 p.m. (ET). For the first time in NASCAR national series history, the first 25 laps of the race were run using the wet-weather package. The trucks utilized tires for damp track conditions and blinking lights to help drivers navigate around each other.

Once the track was dry enough, a competition caution was thrown so teams could put their regular — ‘slick’ — tires back on.

Kyle Busch, seeking the 100th win for his Truck Series team, outpaced the field in the opening laps but once normal conditions resumed, Heim took the lead and maintained it the rest of the way.

Busch finished second followed by polesitter Zane Smith, Ty Majeski and Tanner Gray to complete the top five. Ben Rhodes, Matt DiBenedetto, Taylor Gray, 16-year-old Truck Series debutant William Sawalich and Chase Purdy rounded out the top 10.
