SPEEDWAY, Ind. – Juan Pablo Montoya has nightmares about winning the annual NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but this year he is hoping to put those nightmares to rest.
Montoya turned the fastest lap in opening practice Friday for the Sprint Cup Series as the tour prepares for the 20th running of the Crown Royal Presents the Samuel Deeds 400.
Montoya, driving the No. 42 Chevrolet for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, hit the top of the chart with a lap 48.541 seconds at 185.410 mph.
Montoya, the 2000 Indianapolis 500 winner, has twice led the most laps at Indy in Sprint Cup competition, only to come up short in his quest to become the first driver to win the 400-mile Sprint Cup race and the Indianapolis 500.
Kurt Busch, who tested an IndyCar at IMS in the weeks before the Indianapolis 500 in May, was second fastest at 48.821 seconds and 184.347 mph.
Austin Dillon, making his debut at Indianapolis in a Sprint Cup car, was third fastest. Paul Menard and Kasey Kahne completed the top five.
Kyle Larson and Brian Vickers topped the two NASCAR Nationwide Series practices at the 2.5-mile asphalt oval.
