2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion Martin Truex Jr. announced Friday that he’ll retire from full-time racing following the 2024 season. He’ll remain in a role with Joe Gibbs Racing.Â
A winner of 34 Cup races, Truex had contemplated retirement for multiple seasons before finally deciding to call it quits. He and Joe Gibbs Racing negotiated one-year deals for 2023 and 2024 after a multi-year deal expired following the 2022 season.Â
Truex made his Cup debut in 2004 before going full-time in 2006 with Dale Earnhardt Incorporated. He won his first race in 2007 at Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway. In 2010, Truex shifted over to Michael Waltrip Racing and won his second career race in 2013.Â
But when Truex joined Furniture Row Racing in 2014, his career began to take off. He won once in 2015 and four times in 2016 before dominating the 2017 season with eight victories en route to his title. Furniture Row shut down after the 2018 season and Truex joined Joe Gibbs Racing in 2019, winning seven times.
After a winless 2022 season, Truex fired back in 2023 with three victories, including an emotional triumph at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in July. He hasn’t won since.Â
Truex has made five appearances in the Cup Series Championship 4 resulting in three runner-ups in points. He also has two Xfinity Series titles and 13 victories.Â
