TALLADEGA, Ala. – Kasey Kahne picked up his third pole of the season Saturday afternoon at Talladega Superspeedway.

Kahne’s lap of 50.017 at 191.455 mph gave the Washington native his first pole at Talladega. Ryan Newman will start second in the No. 39 Chevrolet for Stewart Haas Racing during the Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500 on Sunday.

“These guys do a great job. Lots of Hendrick engines towards the front of the pack tomorrow,” said Kahne after his 25th career Sprint Cup pole. “It is fun to get my first pole at Talladega. This is a tough track, we’ve never done that. It felt good and we’ll see how it runs tomorrow.”

Defending race winner Clint Bowyer qualified third in the No. 15 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota. Tony Stewart and Greg Biffle completed the top five in qualifying.

Other chase contenders qualified sixth (Jeff Gordon), Martin Truex, Jr. (ninth), Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (12th), Matt Kenseth (15th), Jimmie Johnson (17th), Kevin Harvick (21st), Brad Keselowski (22nd) and Denny Hamlin (23rd).

Only 43 cars took time during qualifying Saturday and all of them will start the race on Sunday.
