Eli Tomac will not race the Monster Energy AMA Supercross finale at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah, due to a thumb injury he sustained last Saturday during free practice at Empower Field in Denver, Co.
The Star Racing Yamaha rider will also miss the opening rounds of the AMA Pro Motocross series, which begins later this month, in order to focus on recovery. He recently announced his intent to run the full outdoor season, along with the SuperMotocross World Championship playoff rounds at the end of the year.
Tomac is planning to undergo surgery to repair a Bennett Fracture and torn ligaments in his thumb.
The estimated recovery time for his injury is six to eight weeks.
“This is not the news I wanted to break to everyone, but at Denver Supercross in free practice I crashed on my thumb and it’s resulted in a Bennett fracture and some torn ligaments that will require surgery to stabilize my thumb. This is a tough one to swallow, knowing that I’m going to miss the opening rounds of motocross, but I’m optimistic I will be able to race the later portion of the outdoor season and the SMX rounds,” Tomac said in a Yamaha press release.
Jeremy Coker, Star Racing Yamaha’s team manager, added, “It’s unfortunate to have Eli sit out this weekend and the opening rounds of the outdoor season, but our main focus is to have him back healthy. It’s just part of racing.”
