Stewart Sets Fast Time During Qualifying In San Diego

The practice gate dropped on the final qualifying session of the day for Monster Energy AMA Supercross at SnapDragon Stadium in San Diego, Calif., and it was last week’s winner Eli Tomac who rocketed to the front.

However, at the checkered flag, Malcolm Stewart claimed the top qualifying spot with a 50.008-second lap time.

The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna rider broke the 50-second range early in the second session with a 50.942-second lap time. His time was quickly beat by Monster Energy Kawasaki teammates Jason Anderson and Adam Cianciarulo who jointly made their way up the leaderboard, one-hundredth of a second apart.

With three minutes remaining in the eight-minute session, Red Bull KTM’s Cooper Webb held the lead with a 50.273-second time, but Stewart set the fast time of the day with a minute-and-a-half to go.

Honda HRC’s Chase Sexton qualified second with a 50.108-second lap time and Webb settled for third with a 50.118-second lap time. Tomac finished fourth, Dylan Ferrandis came in fifth and Anderson came back for sixth. Cianciarulo, Colt Nichols, Ken Roczen and Justin Barcia rounded out the top 10.

450 Qualifying No. 1 Results

During the first qualifying session earlier in the day, Anderson was the first to drop into the 50-second range with a fast lap of 50.639 seconds.

The Kawasaki rider had a tough weekend in Anaheim, Calif., at the season opener two weeks ago, hitting the dirt several times in practice and finishing seventh in the main event. However, Anderson looked like his old self on the San Diego turf. Tomac finished the initial qualifying session in second with a 51.043-second lap time while Sexton snuck into third with a 51.097-second lap time.
