Honda HRC’s Chase Sexton was the only rider to drop his lap time into the 43-second range during Monster Energy AMA Supercross qualifying at Empower Field in Denver, Co., on Saturday afternoon.
Last week’s winner turned a fast lap of 43.968 seconds at the mile-high stadium.Â
H.E.P. Motorsports’ Ken Roczen was second in qualifying, challenging Sexton with a 44.378-second lap time on his No. 94 Suzuki. Series points leader Eli Tomac was third on his No. 1 Star Racing Yamaha.Â
With Sexton 18 points behind Tomac in the standings, the Colorado native could potentially clinch his third 450SX title in front of his hometown crowd. Tomac won the Supercross championship in the same fashion last year, wrapping up the title fight a race early.
Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Adam Cianciarulo qualified fourth, while Fire Power Honda’s Dean Wilson was fifth.
Justin Hill, Colt Nichols, Kyle Chisholm, Josh Hill and Anthony Rodriguez filed into the top 10.
