IMOLA, Italy — It was a dream weekend for Tom Sykes at the famed Imola road circuit.
A day after winning the Superpole for the eni FIM World Superbike Championship round, Sykes rode his Kawasaki to a sweep of Sunday’s two events.
Sykes dominated the opening race en route to his fourth victory of the season and the ninth of his career, pulling away from Davide Giugliano (Althea Racing Aprilia) during the second half of the race.
Giugliano finished second with Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing Team) with Marco Melandri (BWM Motorrad GoldBet) and Michel Fabrizio (Red Devils Aprilia) rounding out the top five.
Sykes led every single lap of race two to cross the line as the winner for the 10th time in his WSBK career and the fifth time this season, equaling his victory total from the previous two seasons combined.
After the disappointment of the first race, Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike) redeemed himself to end up a lonely second ahead of works Aprilia rider Sylvain Guintoli.
Melandri and Chaz Davies (BMW Motorrad GoldBet) filled the top five in the nightcap.
