LEICESTERSHIRE, England – Tom Sykes and the Kawasaki Racing Team set a 1:30.278 lap-time to finish on top of Friday’s first World Superbike qualifying session at Donington Park.
Jonathan Rea and the Pata Honda World Superbike team were more than a second behind Sykes at the close of the first qualifying session.
Sykes encouraging start to the weekend was hampered by a late crash at turn four that damaged his Ninja ZX-10R, but the works Kawasaki rider walked away from the gravel uninjured.
Marco Melandri kept his momentum after Monza’s success up by finishing third , followed by Aprilia duo of Sylvain Guintoli and Davide Giugliano, home rider Leon Camier and Michel Fabrizio. Melandri’s team mate Chaz Davies was eighth ahead of works Aprilia rider Eugene Laverty.
