MISANO ADRIATICO, Italy – Tom Sykes drove to a double victory in World Superbike competition at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli Sunday.
It is the defending World Superbike champions third double victory of the 2014 season as he looks to capture his second-straight championship.
In race one Toni Elias (Red Devils Roma Aprilia) that took the lead at the start with a holeshot before Sykes forced his way past towards the end of the opening lap. Both factory Aprilia riders made small mistakes before regrouping, allowing Loris Baz through to give chase to his Kawasaki teammate.
Elias overshot at the start of lap three into turn one whilst the battle at the front was intensifying.
As the race progressed the battle at the front was fast becoming a two rider affair as Sykes and Baz checked out from the rest of the field. As the race entered the final third Sykes was pulling away from Baz by two tenths of second, leaving the Frenchman a lonely second. Marco Melandri finished third for Aprilia behind the Kawasaki duo.
Sykes had little trouble during race two, taking the lead at the start and quickly pulling away as the laps clicked off.
Behind Sykes there was an intense race long three rider fight for the final places on the podium with Baz eventually grabbing second ahead of Melandri after some hard but fair overtakes between the pair.
