JEREZ, Spain – Despite an afternoon crash, Jonathan Rea was still fastest as World Superbike kicked off the weekend Friday at Circuito de Jerez.

Rea started the day by setting the fastest lap of the day during the opening practice session. In the first 10 minutes of the afternoon session Rea crashed in turn eight, tumbling through a gravel trap. His Kawasaki team worked quickly and had him back out on track before the end of the session.

Behind Rea his Kawasaki teammate Tom Sykes set the second fastest time, with Michael van der Mark timing in third fastest for the day. Alex Lowes was fourth fastest overall, followed closely by Marco Melandri.

Eugene Laverty was sixth, with Lorenzo Savadori next in seventh despite a crash in turn two near the end of the second practice. Roman Ramos was eighth, followed by Sylvain Guintoli and Chaz Davies, who set his time in the opening 10 minutes before crashing in turn 13 and not returning for the rest of the practice.
