PORTIMAO, Portugal – Marco Melandri paced both World Superbike practice sessions Friday at Autódromo Internacional do Algarve.
The hot weather and blisteringly hot temperatures saw only a handful of riders improve their practice one times in the second practice, leaving Aprilia Racing Team rider Marco Melandri at the top of the combined time charts a fraction ahead of the improving Tom Sykes. Sykes elevated himself to second despite running off track in the final few moments of the session.
Behind the top two Jonathan Rea, Eugene Laverty, Chaz Davies and Sylvain Guintoli were third to sixth respectively.
Alex Lowes got the better of Leon Haslam and Loris Baz with Davide Giugliano moving up several places in the final ten minutes to claim 10th and the final automatic Superpole 2 place.
Sylvain Barrier (BMW Motorrad Italia) was once again the best classified EVO rider in 11th overall.
