PHILLIP ISLAND, Australia – Eugene Laverty topped the speed charts during day one of World Superbike testing Monday on the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.
The Irishman’s best lap was a 1:30.513 – only three-tenths away Carlos Checa’s track record – was good enough to keep him at the top of the scoring pylon all day. Davide Guigliano, making his factory Ducati debut, was second fastest overall.
Defending World Superbike champion Tom Sykes was third on his Kawasaki, followed by fellow Kawasaki rider Loris Baz.
Laverty’s team-mate Alex Lowes was perhaps the most impressive on Monday. The reigning British Superbike Champion began his World Superbike career by clocking in at 1:31.000, the fifth fastest time of the day. That lap came despite a crash in the first session as he exited MG Corner on his 23rd lap.
