PORTIMAO, Portugal – Jonathan Rea returned from the annual World Superbike summer break and picked up right where he left off by pacing the opening day of practice at the Algarve Int’l Circuit.
Rea’s best lap, a 1:41.817, came in the opening practice of the day and was enough to keep the Kawasaki rider at the top of the practice charts ahead of Ducati’s Marco Melandri , who was fastest in the third practice on Friday.
Jordi Torres was next for MV Agusta Reparto Corse, just a half second behind Rea. Torres completed more laps than anyone on Friday. Toprak Razgatlioglu was fourth for Kawasaki Puccetti Racing ahead of Milwaukee Aprilia’s Eugene Laverty.
The rest of the top-10 were Xavi Fores, Tom Sykes, Michael van der Mark, Alex Lowes and Michael Ruben Rinaldi.
Chaz Davies, meanwhile, crashed in the third practice and will be forced to qualifying in Superpole 1 on Saturday.
