SEPANG, Malaysia – Sylvain Guintoli set the pace in the opening pair of practice sessions for the Superbike World Championship Friday at the Sepang Int’l Circuit.
Guintoli edged his Aprilia Racing Team teammate Marco Melandri and a rejuvenated Toni Elias (Red Devils Roma Aprilia) for the top spot in the second practice session, giving Aprilia a sweep of the top three positions. Guintoli led the way with a fast time of 2:05.096.
Davide Giugliano (Ducati Superbike Team) moved himself to fourth overall with a late surge, displacing reigning champion Tom Sykes, who ended the day fifth. Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) was sixth.
Chaz Davies (Ducati Superbike Team), Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Supersport Team), Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team) and Alex Lowes (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) rounded out the top 10 on the overall practice time chart.
Melandri was fastest in the opening practice session of the day, followed by Elias, Melandri, Sykes and Giugliano.
