ALCANIZ, Spain – Chaz Davies prevented Jonathan Rea from sweeping the World Superbike weekend on Sunday at MotorLand Aragon by earning his second triumph of the season.
In a repeat of last year’s Aragon round, Davies and Rea clashed in the final laps, with Davies managing to best Rea for his record seventh MotorLand Aragon victory.
The start of the race saw Rea battling a pair of Ducati entries, with Xavi Fores and Marco Melandri fighting for the lead with Rea biding his time in third. A wobble by Melandri allowed Rea to move into second before he took the top spot from Fores on lap nine when Fores lost the front of his bike.
While Rea was the leader, it was Davies who was making a charge. With five laps left Davies began to hound Rea for the race lead. They continued to battle on the final lap when Rea ran wide in the middle sector, allowing Davies to pull away to victory.
Melandri completed the podium in third to give the Aruba.it Racing – Ducati squad two bikes on the podium. Alex Lowes and Michael van der Mark were fourth and fifth for Pata Yamaha.
Tom Sykes overcame a rough start to finish sixth on his Kawasaki, followed by Michael Ruben Rinaldi, Jordi Torres, Toprak Razgatlioglu and Lorenzo Savadori.
