LUSAIL, Qatar – Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP’s Maverick Vinales topped the opening day of MotoGP testing on Saturday at the Losail Int’l Circuit.
Vinales rode his Yamaha YZR-M1 to a best time of 1:55.051, which was .108 of a second faster than the Suzuki of Alex Rins at the end of the day.
“I’m really happy, because I felt really good on the bike, especially my riding style,” said Vinales. “I felt comfortable on the bike and for me that’s the most important. This year at four different tracks I felt comfortable on the bike and we could push quite a lot. I’m happy about how we worked today. We haven’t done much testing, we tried just to focus on the main things and found a bit more grip and tried to understand which way to go. Now we have to make a plan for tomorrow.”
The Ducati duo of Andrea Dovizioso and Danilo Petrucci were third and fourth, respectively. They were followed by the second Monster Energy Yamaha of Valentino Rossi in fifth.
Tito Rabat, Fabio Quartararo, Takaaki Nakagami, Pol Espargaro and reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez were sixth through 10th on the speed charts.
