JEREZ, Spain – Fresh off his first MotoGP pole, Fabio Quartararo shocked onlookers again on Monday by setting a new lap record around Circuito de Jerez during testing.
Quartararo rode his Petronas Yamaha SRT to a stunning time of 1:36.376 late in the day. He was .418 of a second faster than Cal Crutchlow, who also bettered the previous lap record aboard his LCR Honda.
Behind the lead duo, Quartararo’s teammate Franco Morbidelli also showed strong form by going third after qualifying second for Sunday’s event. Morbidelli was testing Yamaha’s factory aerodynamic package for the first time while Quartararo was testing an update to the internal fork on his bike.
Crutchlow was trying out some new clutch electronics to help him during race starts. He completed 78 laps en route to ending the day second fastest.
Pol Espargaro had a busy day as the KTM rider tested chassis parts, chassis settings and engine parts. He was fourth fastest overall. Maverick Viñales ended the day fifth fastest as his Monster Energy Yamaha team focused on testing some electronic updates to help with his throttle connection.
