LUSAIL, Qatar – Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso stood tall after the first day of the final MotoGP pre-season test on Friday at the Losail Int’l Circuit.
Yamaha’s Maverick Viñales and LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow completed the top three.
There were a number of crash on Friday, including reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez, Pol Espargaro and Andrea Iannone.
Dovizioso put down the a best lap of 1:54.819, which was faster than the race record set by his new teammate Jorge Lorenzo. Dovizioso put in 36 laps of work on the new Desmosedici GP17 while Lorenzo continued the process of adapting to his new bike and finished fifth.
“In this first day of testing at Losail I had a really good feeling with my Desmosedici GP, better than I had expected, and the sensations were positive just like in Malaysia,” said Dovizioso. “We tried several different types of interesting set-up, which gave us some important feedback. Today everyone was very quick, but in any case I was able to set my time quite easily. We know we still have to improve certain aspects, but to start the tests in this way helps us a lot for the work that we have to do in the next couple of days.”
The most impressive rider on Friday was actually Karel Abraham of Pull&Bear Aspar Team, who stunned the paddock by finishing the day fourth fastest.
Jonas Folger wasthe fastest rookie, ending the day sixth fastest for Monster Yamaha Tech 3. Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi was seventh, followed by Dani Pedrosa, rookie Johann Zarco and Andrea Iannone.
