PENSKE BUYS IMS & INDYCAR

Monday, Nov. 4, marked the dawn of a new era in American open-wheel racing when Hulman & Co. announced it is selling the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IndyCar to motorsports icon Roger Penske.

“The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has been the centerpiece and cathedral of motorsports since 1909 and the Hulman-George family has proudly served as the steward of this great institution for more than 70 years,” said Tony George, the grandson of Tony Hulman, who saved the speedway from ruin when he purchased it in 1945. “There is no one more capable and qualified than Roger and his team to lead Indy car racing and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway into the future.”

Penske is an 18-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 as a car owner and his company’s involvement in motorsports management dates back to 1973.

Penske’s team with driver Simon Pagenaud swept the IndyCar Grand Prix and Indianapolis 500 during the month of May.
