MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Racing helmets are often masterful pieces of art as much as they are a key part of a driver’s safety equipment.
SPEED SPORT and Bell Racing USA are joining together to create the SPEED SPORT Bell Brigade, a select group of drivers who will wear custom-painted, co-branded Bell Helmets in 2017.
“When the opportunity to have a program that showcases some of the best talent in the country came up with SPEED SPORT, I was pumped and wanted to make it happen that day,” said Bell Helmets director of motorsports Chris Wheeler. “The outside-the-box thought process of how the program will work, and where we all think it can go has also been fun to work on. The Bell Helmet brand is rich in history and tradition, just like SPEED SPORT, and working together has been a dream.”
Tradition, excellence and creativity are common links between SPEED SPORT, which has been America’s motorsports authority since 1934, and Bell Helmets, the leader in helmet safety and technology innovations. Bringing the two organizations together makes perfect sense to elevate the profile of both brands.
“SPEED SPORT has been covering racers and telling their stories for 83 years,” SPEED SPORT President Ralph Sheheen said. “Now with our new program with another historic racing company, Bell Helmets, we will ride along to victory lane with some of the fastest and best racers in the country.”
The first of 10 driver-helmet combinations was unveiled during this week’s Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa, Okla., with Kevin Thomas Jr. Thomas will pilot the Blazin’ Racin’ Buffalo Wild Wings No. 82 winged sprint car in 2017.
“Using Kevin Thomas Jr. as our first of 10 athletes for this was a no brainer to me,” Wheeler said. “Simply put, I want to make sure the drivers in this program aren’t just good, but awesome. Kevin has been a great ambassador to our brand since he came on board in early 2016 and will be a great racer for years to come.”
