LOS ANGELES – Brazilian Formula One legend Ayrton Senna’s 1987 Lotus 99T front-end wing plates sold for $31,250 at Nate D. Sanders Auctions on Thursday night.
Often voted as one of the most successful Formula One drivers of all time, Senna won two major races – the 1987 Monaco Grand Prix and 1987 Detroit Grand Prix – driving the Lotus 99T. Camel cigarettes sponsored the car.
Senna has been widely recognized as one of the greatest drivers of all-time. He won 41 Formula One races and captured three World Championships. In 1994, Senna was leading the San Marino Grand Prix, when he was killed in a crash. He was 34
Also included in the auction were racing suits from A.J. Foyt and Jacques Villeneuve, which sold for $25,000 and 18,750. Foyt’s racesuit is signed; he wore it during the International Race of Champions (IROC), which he won in 1976 and 1977. Villeneuve wore his driver’s suit in 1995, when he won the Indianapolis 500 and captured the CART championship.
