Historic Race Cars Set To Cross Block Today

andrettiCHARLOTTE, N.C. — Led by the sales of a fully restored, “plum crazy purple” 1970 Plymouth ‘Cuda; a tri-five 1955 Chevy Bel Air; and an NCRS Duntov Award-winning 1966 Corvette Stingray, RK Motors Collector Car Auctions (RKMCCA) registered more than $2 million in total sales on Friday, the opening of its two-day auction at the Charlotte Convention Center.

A day of non-stop action saw the hammer come down on 47 muscle cars, racers and European vehicles, all specifically chosen for this special event.

Saturday will bring a truly international flavor to the 2013 RK Motors Collector Car Auction, with the debut of an industry-first remote auction hub at Abu Dhabi’s Emirates Palace Hotel. During a special four-hour window, consigned cars will be auctioned in person to on-site attendees, as well as simulcast to bidders in the UAE through innovative high-definition, high-resolution, real-time streaming technology.

Both Charlotte and Abu Dhabi participants will get a first-hand look at a piece of true F1 history as James Hunt’s iconic 1977 McLaren M26 (Lot #3032) will be up for bids.  Driven to Hunt’s last-ever Formula 1 win at the Japanese Grand Prix in 1977, the M26, chassis number 3, is powered by a Ford Cosworth DFV 90º V8 that pumps out an incredible 525 horsepower at 10,600RPMs. The M26 has been beautifully preserved and is race- ready, and capable of a top speed of 195mph.

Motorsports fans will have the opportunity to bid on other historic racecars, including Mario Andretti’s 1974 Viceroy Gurney Eagle, Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s 1977 Chevy Nova, a 1978 Chevy Camaro driven by A.J. Foyt, and Ivan “Ironman” Stewart’s 1994 Toyota PPI Trophy truck.

Saturday will also bring the auction of three extremely rare Mercedes-Benz models: a one-of-a-kind 1995 Lotec C1000; a 2002 CLK GTR; and a 1954 300SLGullwing.

“If today’s action was any indication, Saturday’s auction promises to be a one-of-a-kind experience for bidders and enthusiasts here in Charlotte, across the globe in Abu Dhabi, and throughout the world,” said RKMCCA Executive Vice President Bill Mathews.  “This special four-hour simulcast will showcase the innovative approach we bring to the auction world.”
