CONCORD, N.C. – The iconic Ford Mustang turned 50 years old today and fans from across the country converged on the legendary Charlotte Motor Speedway to celebrate the milestone birthday party of America’s favorite pony car.

The Mustang Club of America and Ford Motor Company came together to mark five decades of the Mustang brand as part of a joint birthday celebration with events at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and in Dearborn, Mich., China and Dubai.

“I think the original car when it came out caught America by surprise,” said Bill Ford, the great grandson of Henry Ford, and currently the Executive Chairman of Ford Motor Company. Ford was at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the opening ceremonies of this weekend’s big celebration, where he unveiled a special limited edition 50th Anniversary Mustang.

In total, more than 4,000 cars are expected to take part in this weekend’s four-day event in Charlotte, which includes displays of all years and models, from classics to customs. Drivers can also test their mettle on Charlotte Motor Speedway’s challenging infield road course and high-banked superspeedway or shop for the latest parts and accessories in the vendor midway.

“There are days that are really special and this is one of them and this is as good as it gets,” Ford said of the opening day celebrations at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
