Racing is truly a family affair for 22-year-old Danny Sams III and his parents, Tina and Danny Sams Jr.
Starting in go-karts and quarter midgets, Sams arrived in the winged 410 sprint car ranks two years ago, and he’s enjoying a breakout season behind the wheel of the 24d car owned by Rocky Anderson.
Sams attracted national attention during the 42nd annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek when he drove to victory in three of the eight races. He won at Hilltop Speedway and Muskingum County Speedway, and capped Speedweek with a $10,000-to-win score at Atomic Speedway. He also posted a 360 sprint car triumph at Lawrenceburg (Ind.) Speedway this summer.
“It’s been a phenomenal year. Speedweek was just unbelievable. I attribute our success to hard work and commitment,” said Sams. “We strive to show up prepared and to give it our all. We gave up everything at home — my parents and I put every ounce of effort and energy to making our car better every time the wheels touch the dirt. It goes to show what hard work and dedication can do.”
FAST on Dirt leader Aaron Fry, whose series administrated Ohio Sprint Speedweek, feels Sams is “the real deal.”
“For such a young age, he’s smart, patient and takes what the car is capable of giving him. He has earned the respect of his peers,” Fry explained. “There are a lot of good, talented young sprint car drivers across this country and Danny Sams has a very bright future.”
His mom and dad bring much more than moral support to Sams’ racing program.
