Undefeated may be the most prestigious title in sports. Whether it’s the 1972 Miami Dolphins that were a perfect 17-0, or the six women’s college basketball teams coached be Geno Auriemma that didn’t lose a single game, those marks leave a lasting impression.
In motorsports, going unbeaten is virtually impossible due to a multitude of factors such as mechanical failures, length of schedule, tight competition, weather and other variables
Max Verstappen won 19 of 23 Formula 1 races a year ago and that’s as close to perfect as it normally gets in major-league racing.
Enter Gaige Herrera.
Many may not even recognize the name. NHRA drag racers tend to be glossed over compared to NASCAR, IndyCar and Formula 1 drivers by American fans, especially in the Pro Stock Motorcycle category of the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series.
While Herrera won six consecutive races to start the season, his winning streak also includes the final five events from his rookie campaign. As a result, the 30-year-old rider from La Miranda, Calif., has recorded 11 straight NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle national event victories.
That’s not only a class record, but an overall NHRA record. The previous mark of 10 in a row belonged to Pro Stock legend Bob Glidden.
Herrera will attempt to raise his mark to an even dozen this weekend when the Pro Stock Motorcycles visit Washington’s Pacific Raceways.
