INSIDER: Sheheen —  A Northern California Gem

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — The first event I worked as a trackside announcer was an American Federation of Motorcyclists race at the California road course now known as Sonoma Raceway.

My announcing position was in an office trailer under a bridge that used to stretch across the front straightaway of the facility’s road course. A few years ago, during track upgrades, the bridge was removed and its whereabouts became a mystery.

Well, I found it!

The bridge has been refurbished and now spans a section of the track at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows, Calif., some two hours north.

Thunderhill is a road racer’s dream facility with three different tracks winding through the foothills of northern California’s coastal mountain range. In addition to multiple layouts that will continuously challenge even the best corner carver, the mountains make a spectacular backdrop while also providing incredible elevation changes.

The track was the brainchild of longtime friend David Vodden, who has been a major contributor to the northern California racing scene for decades. The veteran motorsports professional spent countless hours and resources to make his dream a reality. Today, Thunderhill Raceway Park is best known for its wildly popular 25 Hours of Thunderhill.
