Scott Borchetta believed Nashville, one of this country’s most vibrant cities, was the perfect destination for the NTT IndyCar Series to host its 2024 championship race.
The founder, CEO and president of Big Machine Label Group, Borchetta envisioned a show-stopping performance on the streets of Nashville with the IndyCar champion crowned on Broadway.
Borchetta was one of the creators of the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix, which debuted in 2021. The annual event drew big crowds as the temporary racing circuit utilized the roads and parking lots adjacent to Nissan Stadium before crossing the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge, negotiating a hairpin turn and then coming back over the bridge.
The event was run in late July or early August and proved to be a wild race. It was also popular with the partygoers who come to Nashville to have a good time.
By making the Music City GP the IndyCar season finale, it would shine a spotlight on the champion and cap the season in grand style.
The race was scheduled for Sept. 15 and announced as the IndyCar season finale last August, but signs of trouble began to develop during the winter.
The home stadium of the Tennessee Titans is a vital part of the race course and the NFL schedule would not be released until May. So, it was unknown if the Titans would have a home game the same day.
Borchetta had a decision to make.
