INSIDER: BOURCIER — How the Nerds Ruined Racing – and Breakfast

INDIANAPOLIS — Here she came, heading my way, a pot of coffee in her left hand and the usual notepad in her right. When she set down the coffee and pulled a pen from her pocket, I beat her to the punch.

“French toast,” I said.

She is my regular counter waitress at my regular breakfast joint, and that is my regular order. Every time, she says, “No butter, right?”

But today, she had a different question for me.

“Did Roger Penske know what was happening?”

She was talking about the scandal that has rocked IndyCar racing since the series nullified Josef Newgarden’s victory and Scott McLaughlin’s third-place finish in the season opener at St. Petersburg, and gave fourth-place man Will Power a points penalty.
